New gallery: European Cities

This gallery, European Cities, is similar to ‘In the Streets’; the focus of these photographs however is on the cities’ landmarks and peculiarities rather than the people living in them.

New gallery: In the Streets

My camera often accompanies me at my aimless wanderings through European cities. In the latest gallery, In the Streets, you may see what I encountered during my trips.

New gallery: a3s7rAcT

Welcome the latest addition to the portfolio: a3s7ract. As my creativity goes into images rather than words, I’ll let Albert Camus give you some food for thought while you’re browsing the gallery: ‘Abstract Art: A product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered.’

New gallery: (In the name of) Love

The gallery (In the Name of) Love is now online. It features my interpretations of the (it has to be said) rather commonplace type of photographs you may find all over the internet. They make for a nice present though.

New gallery: Animals (are beautiful people)

I’ve just uploaded the next portfolio gallery: Animals (are beautiful people). The photographs range from venomous sheep and bunnies to fluffy arachnids – or something along those lines.

[Enter] The Portfolio

Thumbnails of the first three galleries.

After much ado about nothing and loads of sound and fury with various gallery programs I have finally settled for one that suits my needs. I proudly present the new portfolio, implemented into the site structure for good (long live kimili).
The portfolio has been created using Flash 8 and Slide Show Pro with the Wet Floor Mod. I’ll gradually replace the old posts which still run using Simpleviewer and captions will be added to the pictures.
For now, check out the first three galleries: ‘Aaand Action’ features people trying to break out of their everyday routine and pushing their limits. ‘The World is a Stage’ [but the play is badly cast. -Oscar Wilde] shows pictures from musicians, actors, or anybody else able to draw an audience around them. ‘Me Myself and I’ gives you an idea of the guy behind the camera – photographers are usually strangely absent from their own work.
Don’t forget to come back for more, I’ll be adding a new gallery in the portfolio every day until… well, until I run out of photographs.

Inspired by Nature

A while ago I discovered a small pond in a nearby nature reserve. Yesterday I went back to take some picture of these little green creatures and ended up with what I thought a nice concept for an advert.
One of the frogs meanwhile tried to outsmart me by jumping onto the camera.

Artsfest 2007

Yesterday the Canterbury Campus of the University of Kent saw another edition of the popular Artsfest. I was taking pictures for inQuire and tried to be everywhere at the same time: there were four stages hosting acts such as the Makeshift Minstrels, the UKC Dramatics, the UKC Concert Band and Big Band, and the winner of Keynestock, Elena Goulding. Students and families enjoyed a sunny day of entertainment, face-painting, food and drink, and, after 10pm, the ‘Big Bang’ – fireworks overlooking the Canterbury Cathedral. (As a photojournalist, I had to find out that even being persuasive doesn’t allow you to shoot from the library roof when nobody knows where the keys are.)

Kent F.C. wins Charity Cup

Yesterday’s football tournament at the University of Kent saw four teams competing against each other for the coveted Mike Wilkins Charity cup. Sports Development Elect won the 3rd/4th place play-off against the Sports Centre Staff. The final ended with Kent F.C. finally beating the Sports Sabbatical Elect during the penalty shootouts. Mike Wilkins himself handed the silver cup to the happy winners.

David’s Birthday

David Lang became 19 yesterday! Hooray! In order to celebrate we went to town and played Pub Golf. Ed and me came first with ten sips for nine holes.

5-A-Side

Today the University of Kent Sports Centre organized a 5-A-Side football tournament on the Park Wood pitches. Here are some pictures from the game.

Keynestock 2007

Kent Union’s annual Keynestock offers student bands from the University of Kent the possibility to display their talent. Hosted by the Keynes JCC and broadcasted live on Canterbury Student Radio, this year’s edition was the first one ever to completely sell out.
More photographs will be published in the next edition of inQuire, out on Tuesday, May 22nd.

Update 20140414: I had messed up the photos on the server a long time ago; that’s finally been fixed now. Eleanor / Ellie Goulding has come a long way since I first posted these!

Shooting with Kate

Candy Lips
I did a short shooting with Kate from the Student Bar for the DPChallenge contest Selective Desaturation. I got the sugar strands from Tesco and some lipgloss from Boots – I had to ask for assistance though, as I would almost have bought nail polish by mistake. As the gloss was quite sticky it was not a problem to get the strands to stick to Kate’s lips. Putting them on was a bit messy, but I don’t think Kate was that annoyed that she had to eat some of them :)
Above is one picture from the series, the one I submitted to the challenge. I used natural light from a window and cardboard covered with kitchen foil as a reflector from below. In retrospect setting the aperture to F/1,8 at 50mm might have been a bit too shallow at this short distance, especially when it is crucial to have both the lips and the eyes in focus, which rather limits the vertical angles from which one can shoot.

Rugby

Yesterday a mixed tag rugby tournament was held on the University of Kent Park Wood pitches. I didn’t stay to cover the finals in the evening, but here are some pictures from the afternoon.Mixed Tag Rugby

Softair in Veckring

Benoit, Olivier, Yorick and me went to Veckring and gave their paintball arena a try. Here are some pictures I took with my new 40€ digital camera:

Die Dreigroschenoper – Photographs

Tonight I saw the pre-premiere of the Dreigroschenoper. Albeit I had seen the show twice before, being able to concentrate entirely on the play itself rather than photographing it is always a completely different experience. I really enjoyed the performance. The actors did a great job, the director and his team made some interesting changes since last week. The only thing I didn’t like was a weird siren sound effect which I found rather ridiculous.
I’ve been told that all the regular shows in the Grand Théatre are already sold out, but if you want to get an idea of what the play looks like, below are some of the photographs I had already taken of the production for press packs and the programme booklet.
Something seems to be wrong with the slideshow, so I’m afraid you’ll have to view it HERE and use the back button in your browser.

Die Dreigroschenoper - Order TicketsThe University of Luxembourg stages Die Dreigroschenoper by Bertold Brecht and Kurt Weill in the Grand Théatre in Luxembourg City. I took the photograph used for the poster (below) and a number of photographs for the programme. Tickets for the shows from Arpil 13th to 20th can be booked here. I will upload some pictures after the opening night.

Nice Wanton

Nice Wanton ThumbnailThe online version of the N.I.C.E. Wanton Project is now available for download. For the final project of the EN302 Early Drama module at the University of Kent, Charlie Smith, Stuart Halling and I have modernized the 16th century interlude Nice Wanton and turned it into a photo story.

In a society where a maximum of productivity is the ultimate goal, a pill has been developed to obliterate all idleness. The National Injection Corporation for the Elimination of Wanton (N.I.C.E. Wanton) propagates complete uniformity among the population and absolute obedience to the government. Only Ismael and Dalilah refuse to give in to the medication-mania. Together with Oppugnancy, who operates from the underground, they find out that there is more to the pills than anybody expected…

Exhibition!

I am taking part in an exhibition organized by the UKC Photographic Society. Come and have a look at our works in the Rutherford Airport Lounge at the University of Kent, Canterbury.
UKC Photographic Society Exhibition
I designed the poster / flyer, by the way :)

Where’s the Airport Lounge?

If you go into Rutherford and take the door to the right of the dining room doors, follow this path along, so you are overlooking the dining hall, then take the first set of stairs you have got to on your left, then you are go into the Rutherford Airport lounge. It should be signed on the night as well.
